Our friend and Past Board Member of MFGS is bringing Doyle Dykes to town again. For those of you who don't know his work, he's one of the great guitarists playing today. Doyle is a deeply devout Christian, and brings considerable spirituality to his concerts. Part of our mission at MFGS is to introduce new guitarists for you to see along with some of our favorites. For this year we have a guitarist who is new to us, but not at all new to the world of fingerstyle guitar. We are introducing the highly acclaimed German guitarist Peter Finger to our MFGS audience. Peter put out one of his first CD’s on Stephan Grossman’s ‘Kicking Mule’ record label at age 18 in 1974. Although quartered in Europe, Peter has toured extensively throughout the world, and based on the comments of Bensusan, D’Agostino, Juber, Emmaneul, Taylor & Renbourn, amongst others, Peter Finger clearly is in the elite class of fingerstylists in the world. Peter uniquely plays with 5 steel fingerpicks and has a very dynamic style yet has the ability to elicit very subtle tonal qualities from his guitar.

In answering a question about what he tries to accomplish in his workshops Finger states ...

" A lot of times, you’re faced with a group of students that includes beginners as well as players who are almost professionals. I try to give a lot of general advice about topics such as interpretation of a theme, dynamic expression, or the art of a composition. It’s not just about technique on the guitar, but also about playing in a musical way. Creating good tone is also part of it. Sometimes it’s mostly about stimulating the student. Many times I’ve heard that participants get a lot out of just watching me interpret a piece. Workshops are mostly about inspiration and motivation. You can’t really improve your technique in just a few days, this will take years of practice, but the motivation is important"

As always, we try to introduce a new guitarist for you to see along with some of our favorites. Well, this group is new but surely you remember our Italian friend, guitarist and composer Pino Forastiere.

This was an epiphany for Pino and it created an opportunity to explore all the subtle sound possibilities that the guitar could create and then orchestrate them together for his pieces. This will be his 4^th appearance here with MFGS and his following has grown exponentially. Laurence Juber was hand picked to join Paul McCartney’s ‘Wings’ band as lead guitarist. After the band broke up Laurence embarked on a career path of solo fingerstyle composer and guitarist. He is one of the elite fingerstyle guitarists in the world today. Laurence has recorded over 20 albums, over 80 recordings with others and has composed music for stage, television and movies. As part of MFGS's mission, all performers will sponsor a guitar workshop prior to their performances. These workshops are open to all levels of players. April 17^th – We bring back our Italian virtuoso friend Pino Forastiere along with his compatriots Stefano Barone & Sergio Altamura. Each one of these Candyrat Recording Artists www.candyrat.com could single handedly put on an amazing performance but to have all three of them together is more than impressive. Their music is both progressive and perhaps even bordering on experimental at times, yet they also have the ability to weave some stunningly beautiful music too!

Dear Friends of MFGS,

In honor of our upcoming Thanksgiving holiday we will send out some thanks before spreading the news.

We were fortunate witnesses to a remarkable & masterfully artistic guitar performance. Michael left on Sunday with an appreciation of some of our Detroit art too! He marveled at the DIA's Diego Rivera Mural and it's permanent collection and even ventured to the lower east side of Dtown to take in the Heidelberg Project http://www.heidelberg.org/ . Michael, we'll be waiting on your new CDs to come out and hope to have you back in the future.

Kevin Tarnas, thanks for bringing your energy to our society as a member of our board. You single-handedly revitalized our picking parties and we hope to maintain the energy you brought. All the best from us to you and keep us informed on your upcoming performances.

LIVE PERFORMANCE AND PICKING PARTY on SUNDAY DECEMBER 6TH,

JB Davies www.jbdavies.com co-founder of MFGS will perform live 2pm -3:30pm @ the DESSERT OASIS www.DessertOasis.net 205 S. Main St. (Rochester Rd.) at corner of Main and Second in downtown Rochester (google the address for a map). After JB's performance MFGS will sponsor a Picking Party 3:30 - 5pm. The Dessert Oasis is a very comfortable coffee house venue and our picking parties consist of supportive guitarists and friends of fingerstyle guitar. All level of players (and listeners) are welcome. Come to listen or to play and enjoy a light lunch, coffee and desserts. Our good friend and former board member, Dave Pierson, is returning to our board after a sabbitical of sorts and will host the picking party.

Some highlights of next years performances. For our 2010 Spring Series we should use the title “if you can’t visit Europe, we will bring Europe to you” Series. We will start off with the remarkable German fingerstylist, Peter Finger, who will visit MFGS for the first time. Next on the list will be Italy's Guitar Republic, consisting of our good friend and guitar maestro, Pino Forastiere, and his compatriots, Stefano Barone and Sergio Altamura. These guys are pushing the limits beyond progressive Fingerstyle Guitar to where (as Captain Kirk would say) “where no man has gone before”. Finally we will bring back the amazing English guitarist, Laurence Juber (LJ). This two time Grammy Award winner and former lead guitarist of Paul McCartney's 'Wings' will again dazzle us with his brilliance on the guitar.

On Sunday, December 6, 2009 fingerstyle guitarist JB Davies www.JBDavies.com will perform at Dessert Oasis, Rochester’s hip new coffee house! JB’s style is a broad representation of cutting edge fingerstyle guitar. Most of the tunes utilize alternate tunings. His technique includes the heavy use of tapping, slapping, two handed playing over the top of the guitar and the use of the guitar as a percussive instrument.

A MFGS Picking Party will follow the performance. Come bring your guitar, play a few tunes, listen to a few tunes and commiserate with some of the area’s fingerstyle guitarists! This event is for guitarists at all levels of play and the picking party crowd is a very supportive non competative group. Michael received great reviews from MFGS members after his last concert in March 2008. He is truly a fabulous guitarist and entertainer with amazing expressiveness and breathtaking technique. Michael is the only guitarist in the world to win international honors in both nylon and steel string competitions. You won’t want to miss him (besides, it’s our last concert of the year!) We’ve mentioned that he was a student of Andres Segovia and on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiAbqfaYGwk there is a tape from a master class with the master himself. Segovia listens and then impatiently disses a young Chapdelaine off the stage since Michael isn’t following Segovia’s transcription precisely. It's about 9 minutes long but you'll see that Michael makes the best of it and he has come a long way from that day; we hope you’ll see him this Saturday.

Dear Friends of MFGS

Well, as much as we'd like to, we can't book all the great players so Trinity House http://www.trinityhouse.org/ is helping out by bringing in a fabulous fingerstyle guitarist, Richard Gilewitz http://www.richardgilewitz.com/ this Saturday, November 7th. He puts on a great show and if you get a chance to see him you won't be disappointed.

On Sunday November 8th, our good friend Paul Murphy of Blue Fish Music http://www.bluefishguitars.com/ is hosting a soon to be annual Luthier Gathering from 1pm-5pm. There will be about a dozen amateur and pro luthiers from Michigan, Ohio and Ontario getting together to discuss building, swap tonewoods and show off their instruments. Any friends of MFGS are welcome to check it out and try some guitars. Paul will have the stage and amp set up so there will be some open mike time and with the lesson rooms there will be some quiet places to test drive some guitars. Paul also does repairs and helpful with advice on anything to do with guitars.

Of course you know that the remarkable Michael Chapdelaine will close out our 2009 Michigan Fingerstyle Series November 14th (click on our web site, www.fingerstyle.org ). What you don't know yet that on November 14th Michael will be gracing the studio of our good friend Pam Rossi on her Overeasy show, 94.7, WCSX on the dial. We will be on the show sometime after 9am but just set your alarm to Pam's show @ 7am and blend yourself into the morning (Sat. & Sun) with a nice mix of great songs. Also Michael will be heading down to 101.9 WDET to visit with Ann Delisi on her Essential Music Show http://www.wdetfm.org/ann-delisi.php at 12 noon. Ann is back on the radio scene in Detroit on Sat. & Sun. from 12 noon to 4pm bringing home grown, eclectic and new 'essential' music to Detroit’s airwaves.

- There will be demonstrations of Paul's guitars & amps

- Discussion on Fingerstyle arranging

- And of course, your chance to meet and pick a few of your strings with fellow Fingerstyle players. Get there early to sign up to play or just come to listen.

March 7^th Concert Reminder

On March 7^th @ 7:30 (doors open @ 6:30) MFGS will present from Rome , Italy, Pino Forasitere www.forastiere.it along with special guests, Craig D’Andrea & Antoine Dufour. This will be a very special night of Fingerstyle Guitar. All 3 guitarists have quite a following and can be viewed @ www.candyrat.com Tickets will be available @ the door

Pino will conduct a hands on 2 hr guitar workshop from 3pm-5pm the same day as the show. Tickets are still available @ $40. If you go to the workshop & the show (which most folks do) we will discount the costs to you. Workshop & show combined is $50. This is an opportunity to learn some of the finer points of fingerstyle guitar. The format is open at this point so feel free to suggest aspects of playing that you would like to improve on. Stop by for the workshop and then enjoy a bite to eat at one of the local eateries before the show. Call 248-646-4030 for information about the workshop.

In addition to that Paul Murphy of Bluefish Music in Plymouth will be at the show with some instruments http://www.bluefishguitars.com/forsale.html and guitar amps/accessories for you to view before, during intermission and after the show. If you have any questions about any aspect of guitars or amplification Paul is the one to ask.

It is always good to Tune in to Pam Rossi’s ‘Overeasy’ Show, 94.7 FM radio Saturday & Sunday mornings for some good jams. On March 7th Pino will be featured at about 10:30 for in-studio interview/music. For those of you out of broadcast range, tune in on your computer @ http://www.wcsx.com/overeasy/

And in case you missed it, one of our esteemed board members (actually it was his guitar, not him) was featured on history detectives episode 11. We won’t spoil the twists and turns of the plot, nor the outcome. Needless to say, it was quite an interesting show. Check local listings for channels and times.

MFGS updates for March 7th & other news

Friends of MFGS

We continue to look towards the opening of our 8th season with the performance of Pino Forastiere, Craig D’Andrea & Antoine Dufour on March 7th, 7:30pm. We will be @ our usual venue, the First United Methodist Church in Ferndale, 22331 Woodward. Doors open @ 6:30, performances start @ 7:30. There will be an intermission between the 2 sets with coffee/refreshments and deserts in the basement of the church. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students and seniors. You can buy them at the door or online @ www.fingerstyle.org . Having student ID is always helpful.

Pino is having a guitar workshop the day of the show from 3pm - 5pm. Register for the workshop @ 248-646-4030, and then go get a bite to eat at some of the nice restaurants in the area, then come back for the show. If you are attending the workshop the cost is $40. If you go to the workshop & the concert then the total cost is $50. Hmmmm, maybe save a few bucks to spend on CD's!!! The format for the workshop is not set yet and if you have any thoughts on it please contact me @ rxvalle@yahoo.com and we’ll see what we can arrange.

Pino will appear live on Pam Rossi's 'Overeasy' show on WCSX '94.7' @ 10:30am the day of the show http://www.wcsx.com/overeasy/. So tune in & get tuned up for the show! Pam always has great music on Saturday mornings and we sincerely appreciate her continued support for MFGS & the artists that we bring to town.

Paul Murphy of Bluefish Music in Plymouth http://www.bluefishguitars.com/# will also be at the concert. Paul has sponsored a couple of our picking parties on his days off (Sunday) and we appreciate his support to MFGS & friends. Paul is an all around guitar guy since he builds, repairs, sells guitars and all the stuff that goes with guitars. Paul will bring a selection of instruments and accessories to display before the show and at intermission.

One of our northern guitar buddies, Jimmy DeHeno is sponsoring a guitar workshop/performance with the 2008 International Fingerstyle Competition winner, Tim Thompson http://www.timthompsonguitar.com/ on Saturday February 21^st . The workshop is at the Upper Level Music Café, 1227 Tenth Street, Port Huron (use google for map). Cost is $10 at the door but you might want to call Jimmy @ 810-278-2332 for information & to make sure your spot is saved.

And finally, but not in any way, least! One of our special local friends, AJ’s Café in Ferndale http://www.ajsmusiccafe.com/ , is sponsoring another Guinness book world record attempt (They did 50 hours straight of ‘Danny Boy’ song singing last March). This will be the Guinness record "longest concert by multiple artists" The Assembly Line Concert" is a tribute to The American Auto worker, The Big Three and the American way of life. Let’s show some DETROIT LOVE in a gritty, non stop 10 day musical marathon.! March-19-2009, 5 pm at The Assembly Line Concert, 240 w. 9 mile, Ferndale, Michigan 48220, Cost: $5.00
